THE PREDICTION
This is a really intriguing match-up on paper as world number 26 Dan Evans leads number 11 Karen Khachanov 3-0 in their head-to-head record, including a recent victory at the Vienna Open late last year when the Russian was back in form. 32-year-old Evans has improved exponentially on clay over the last few seasons to see some of his best results come on the surface but he has struggled with his form generally this season until recent signs of an upturn. 26-year-old Khachanov is an excellent all-courter with much better results over the last few tournaments, particularly at the Miami Open when he stunned Stefanos Tsitsipas before a tight three-set defeat to eventual champion Daniil Medvedev. All three of their previous encounters have come on indoor hardcourts and it is arguable that these conditions better-suit Khachanov, with Evans’ favoured slice less effective in the slower conditions unless pitch-perfect. The sensible option, given their record, is backing the Russian to earn at least a set here but he should be able to get that first win on the board.
