THE PREDICTION

World number 79 Daniel Altmaier realised his potential on Thursday in front of adoring new fans as he overcame eighth seed Jannik Sinner in five thrilling sets. The 24-year-old has always been a broiling force to come on his favoured clay but a recent career-best run to the quarter-finals of the Madrid Open, as a lucky loser, was an encouraging sign of things to come as much as his loss in qualifying was symptomatic of his career so far. World number 29 Grigor Dimitrov finished runner-up to Nicolas Jarry at the Geneva Open last week, his first final since 2018, and he has brought that searing form into Paris with back-to-back straight-set wins. Less time on court may aid the Bulgarian the longer this match goes on but Altmaier seems the type of player who will stride onto court with renewed confidence rather than feel the pressure of extra eyes. Dimitrov beat the German in their only previous meeting at Indian Wells two years ago but the conditions favour the younger man’s game. Back Altmaier to earn at least a set here, perhaps the first, and leave the victor up to chance.
