THE PREDICTION

This is a huge opportunity for one of world number 74 Cristina Bucsa and number 156 Heather Watson to reach a rare WTA 500 quarter-final. Both players enjoyed big upsets on Tuesday but 31-year-old Watson grabbed her biggest win in years, in straight sets over Veronika Kudermetova, to build on a brilliant qualifying run that included a comeback over Sofia Kenin. 26-year-old Bucsa lost in the last round of qualifying but she came back from a set down to beat Xinyu Wang on Tuesday, making the most of that second wind momentum, to set up what could end up the match of the day despite such a talented order of play. Bucsa has dropped sets in all three of matches played this week, including in defeat to Linda Noskova in qualifying, and that could be significant after Watson joined forces with Noskova in doubles on Wednesday in defeat to the top seeds Perez and Melichar. Back former number 38 Watson to earn at least a set to leave the victor of a likely three-setter up to chance.
