It is surprising to find that this is the first encounter on tour between 26-year-old Cristian Garin and 27-year-old Lorenzo Sonego and it should be a fascinating one on Thursday. Both players are better than their current rankings suggest but world number 86 Garin is especially an anomaly as he looks to be enjoying some resurgent form this season. The Chilean recently enjoyed strong runs on the Sunshine Double before a choppy start on his favoured clay in Houston but a straight-sets victory in the first round here in Munich suggests he will be hard to beat. World number 45 Sonego also enjoyed some resurgent form at the Miami Open and he came back from a set down to oust Quentin Halys on Tuesday. The Italian’s moment in the sun came at the Rome Masters two years ago when he came perilously close to reaching the final at Novak Djokovic’s expense and he probably has the higher ceiling in these conditions if Garin has the more dependable game for clay. Three sets would not be a surprise here but if that option feels too much of a risk take Sonego to earn at least a set with some strong results behind him recently.
