World number 92 Roman Safiullin upset 20th seed Roberto Bautista Agut, a semi-finalist here in 2019, in five gruelling sets in the first round. The 25-year-old was a promising junior before struggling to progress on the main tour until the start of last season, where he helped Russia to the ATP Cup title, and he is well capable of breaking the top 40 on tour at least. On paper, this second round match looked set to be between Richard Gasquet and Bautista Agut but world number 71 Corentin Moutet upset his compatriot in straight sets to reach the second round at Wimbledon for the second time and the diminutive left-hander is easy to underestimate. The 24-year-old has struggled with injuries for most of this season but a run to the round of 16 at the US Open last summer is proof of what he can do with the right draw. Safiullin should have the power to overcome Moutet in these conditions but the Frenchman has a habit of frustrating his opponents into submission. Back Safiullin to earn at least two sets in this interesting first meeting to leave the victor up to chance.
