World number five Coco Gauff reached her maiden Grand Slam final at Roland-Garros last summer before defeat to Iga Swiatek and in many ways the slower surface appears to be her strongest. The 19-year-old fell in straight sets to an inspired Paula Badosa in the third round of the Madrid Open but conditions in Rome are more or less how they feel in Paris and that could aid her this fortnight after a few tournaments of middling form. World number 51 Yulia Putintseva was in a real battle with qualifier Viktoriya Tomova on Wednesday but she did well to come back from a set down to win the third to love. The 28-year-old has failed to win back-to-back matches in each of her last eight tournaments, though, to suggest there is currently a bit of a ceiling when coming up against seeds. Gauff and Putintseva have shared two three-set clashes on clay both here two years ago and in the second round of Madrid last season but the American has come out on top of both so back Gauff to win outright here.
