THE PREDICTION
This could end up the match of the day between world number six Coco Gauff and number 42 Paula Badosa. Former world number two Badosa will receive a near-partisan atmosphere here as the home hopeful in Madrid and it was here that she first really came to the fore two years ago with a huge run to the semi-finals. A three-set victory over Elisabetta Cocciaretto on Thursday was a reasonably solid start given the pressure on her shoulders but recent results on her favoured clay suggest she has a shot here given the last two players to oust her are world number three Jessica Pegula and number two Aryna Sabalenka in Charleston and Stuttgart, respectively. 19-year-old Gauff is a superb clay-courter in her own right, though, who finished runner-up to Iga Swiatek at Roland-Garros last summer in her first Grand Slam final. The American conceded just five games to qualifier Irene Escorihuela on Thursday but she will have to put in her best performance in recent weeks to come through here. Badosa leads Gauff 2-1 in their head-to-head record but a first match on clay will be intriguing. Back Badosa to earn at least a set on home clay and leave the victor up to chance.
