THE PREDICTION

World number three Coco Gauff beat Elisabetta Cocciaretto in straight sets on Tuesday to bounce back from a surprise exit to Katerina Siniakova last week in Doha. The 29-year-old began her season by successfully defending her Auckland Classic title before an excellent run to the semi-finals of the Australian Open, without ever really finding her best level, before defeat to eventual champion Aryna Sabalenka. Gauff beat Sabalenka from a set down to win the US Open last summer, already fulfilling the promise of her fierce rising star over the past few seasons, and it will be fascinating to see what she can do with that particularly pressure decreased.

Former number one Karolina Pliskova may go down in history as one of the best players never to win a major title. The 31-year-old has twice finished runner-up in Grand Slam finals, to Angelique Kerber in New York in 2016 and to Ash Barty at Wimbledon in 2021, but she had slipped as far back as the late 70s in ranking before bursting into form this month. Pliskova won her first WTA title since 2020 in Romanian two weeks ago before a run to the semi-finals in Doha and she came back from a set down to oust Ashlyn Krueger impressively on Tuesday. Two of the best serves on tour face off here for what could be a thrilling contest but Gauff’s tenacity should prove the key factor in this third meeting between the two. The pair share a 1-1 head-to-head record with Gauff earning at least a set in each, so take that cautious option here in lieu of a full result.

TIP: COCO GAUFF TO WIN A SET
