World number seven Coco Gauff had lost each of her seven meetings with Iga Swiatek until Saturday’s humongous effort against the Pole, claiming a first victory over a world number one in three sets. The 19-year-old will be backed to a hilt as the home favourite in her first Masters final in Cincinnati but this first meeting with Karolina Muchova will be a huge test after the Czech came back from a set down to beat pre-tournament favourite Aryna Sabalenka. The 26-year-old will set a new career-high WTA world ranking of 10th no matter the outcome here after a surge up the rankings from finishing runner-up to Swiatek at Roland-Garros in June, just as Gauff did last summer. Muchova has beaten four tough foes in three sets this week to bring fatigue into the equation but it is likelier that she can find an extra gear. Back Gauff to earn at least a set with the momentum of beating the world number one or consider taking this match to see three sets.
