Former world number 33 Clara Tauson overcame fellow future star Leylah Fernandez in three exciting sets on Wednesday to back-up an encouraging run from the qualifiers. The 20-year-old is almost certainly a top 10 player of the near future but endured a very tough 2022 before recently building back confidence on the ITF circuit. Elina Avanesyan, also 20, will break the top 100 on tour for the first time no matter the outcome here after backing-up her excellent opener over an unfit Belinda Bencic with a straight-sets result over home hopeful Leolia Jeanjean. The Russian has nothing to lose on this career-best Grand Slam run after coming through as a lucky loser but Tauson looks too strong and desperate to reclaim her place as a rising star on tour. An outright call would be suitably cautious but the Dane should be coming through in straight sets.
