THE PREDICTION

20-year-old Clara Tauson set a career-high WTA world ranking of 33rd early last season after an excellent breakthrough in 2021, in which she won her first two WTA titles, but she has since struggled first with fitness and then form to fall back as far as 126th this week. The Dane remains one of the most exciting young players on tour but it would be easy to get carried away with her impressive qualifying run this week in this tough draw against Aliaksandra Sasnovich. World number 50 Sasnovich is capable of much better tennis than her current deflated ranking suggests and she has taken sets in two recent tight defeats to top players Marie Bouzkova and Donna Vekic on clay to look competitive on the surface. Sasnovich reached the round of 16 here last summer, stunning former number one Angelique Kerber en-route, and she beat Tauson in their only previous encounter at Melbourne 1 early last year. Take the Belarussian to earn at least a set and leave the victor up to chance.
