World number 38 Bernarda Pera won back-to-back WTA 250 events on clay last summer, her first two trophies, and she looks the reasonable favourite to make that three this week as the highest-remaining seed in the draw in Strasbourg. A straight-sets victory over Kimberly Birrell improved on a slightly choppy opener in the first round but the American is at her best on clay and she should be able to find a way past home hopeful Clara Burel in this first meeting between the two. World number 122 Burel almost broke the top 70 on tour at her peak but the Frenchwoman has struggled to maintain any sort of rhythm over the past few seasons. A straight-sets victory over Kaia Kanepi on Tuesday backed-up a very surprising win over in-form Sorana Cirstea in the first round that suggests she has found an extra gear in Strasbourg but battle-hardened Pera should be her toughest challenge at this stage of the tournament. Back Pera to earn at least a set inside an accumulator or to edge through outright on its own, with Burel set to enjoy a partisan atmosphere here.
