THE PREDICTION
World number two Aryna Sabalenka improved on her slightly choppy opener against Maryna Zanevska with a more assured result over Jodie Burrage on Thursday but both matches fell in straight sets. The 25-year-old has reached back-to-back semi-finals here, losing to runner-up Leylah Fernandez in 2021 and last year’s eventual champion Iga Swiatek, but she comes in as an even bigger contender in 2023 after winning her maiden Grand Slam title at the Australian Open in January. World number 62 Clara Burel is also through to the third round without dropping a set after claiming one of the biggest ranking wins of her career over an ailing Karolina Pliskova. The 22-year-old recently finished runner-up to Elisabetta Cocciaretto in Lausanne on her favoured clay and she can break the top 60 on tour for the first time if she produces the biggest shock of the tournament here.
That seems unlikely, though, considering Sabalenka conceded just two games in defeating Burel this time last summer at this exact stage of the US Open. Back Sabalenka to win in two, with Burel capable of taking a few more sets this time around.
