THE PREDICTION
World number 56 Claire Liu came back from a tight 11-9 tiebreak down to beat wildcard Camilla Rosatello on Wednesday for a first win on clay this season. The 22-year-old found some strong form on the surface this time last season to win a Paris Challenger before finishing runner-up to Martina Trevisan at the Morocco Open but this looks a tough ask in her current form against world number 40 Marta Kostyuk. 20-year-old Kostyuk won her maiden WTA title at the Austin Open back in March but she has lost three of her four matches since, including her first on clay this season to Camila Osorio at the Madrid Open. The Ukrainian did enjoy a strong run to the semi-finals of the Women’s Doubles to bring some better clay form into this second round clash but both players would prefer faster conditions. Liu beat Kostyuk in three sets in their only previous encounter at Melbourne 1 last season but back Kostyuk to earn at least a set here as the likelier of two capable winners.
