THE PREDICTION
World number 33 Grigor Dimitrov avoided an early upset well on Wednesday, ousting Marrakech Open champion Roberto Carballes Baena in comfortable straight sets. The 32-year-old has not won an ATP title in over five years since claiming his most prestigious of eight trophies at the ATP Finals in 2017 but he has at least one on each surface, with a clay title claimed at the Bucharest Open in 2014. World number 85 Christopher O’Connell is yet to reach a tour final at 28 years old but the Aussie could well achieve that aim this year after a thoroughly impressive start to 2023. O’Connell was in control against Bernabe Zapata Miralles before his opponent was forced to retire injured on Wednesday but recent wins over Botic van de Zandschulp and Alexander Zverev on clay make him a threat to Dimitrov here, who blows hot and cold more than most players on tour. The Bulgarian should be coasting through in straight sets at his best but realistically the most sensible pick here is taking Dimitrov to earn at least a set and leaving the victor up to chance.
