27-year-old Christopher Eubanks set a new career-high ATP world ranking of 31st last week after his incredible run to the quarter-finals at Wimbledon was eventually ended by Daniil Medvedev. The American embarked on a remarkable 10-match winning streak on grass after winning his maiden ATP title at the Mallorca Championships, beating the likes of Ben Shelton, Cam Norrie and Stefanos Tsitsipas before running out of steam in a five-setter with Medvedev and it is a relief to see him win his next match in straight sets against Andres Martin here on Tuesday. World number 58 Brandon Nakashima came very close to matching Eubanks’ run last summer when he lost to eventual runner-up Nick Kyrgios in five sets and the 21-year-old went on to win the Next Gen ATP Finals. 2023 has been a struggle for Nakashima in the main but there have been some encouraging signs lately. This looks too steep of a challenge at this moment in time given Eubanks’ confident win on Tuesday but three sets seem likelier than two in a first encounter between two Americans who should share warm support in the early stages.
