THE PREDICTION
21-year-old Caty McNally could break the top 60 on tour for the first time after hammering Italian wildcard Dalila Spiteri 6-0, 6-1 on Wednesday. The American did well at the Catalonia Challenger last week before coming unstuck against in-form Sorana Cirstea but she will fancy her chances against world number 38 Marie Bouzkova as the Czech comes in with little recent form. 24-year-old Bouzkova did well to beat Aliaksandra Sasnovich in three sets at this stage of the Madrid Open two weeks ago and her loss to Jessica Pegula in two tight sets was creditable but a 4-9 record for 2023 coming into Rome certainly suggests McNally can grab a huge win here if she applies pressure throughout. Bouzkova is the more natural clay-courter and it should not be long before she comes back into form but consider taking McNally to earn at least a set here to leave the victor up to chance.
