This is a great opportunity for both world number 94 Caty McNallly and number 95 Kateryna Baindl to reach the third round of the Australian Open for the first time and their rankings suggest it should be a close-run first encounter. 28-year-old Baindl coped well in a three-set victory over Kamilla Rakhimova considering a crowd member attempted to influence things by displaying a Russian flag on the Ukrainian’s side of the court and she could well be motivated by that incident here after a comprehensive third set yesterday. 21-year-old McNally looks set to break the top 90 on tour for the first time after beating lucky loser Laura Pigossi in straight sets and the American has the better recent results behind her after ending last season with a Challenger title in the US.
