World number four Casper Ruud is the two-time defending champion at the Geneva Open and top seed this week hoping for a modicum of consistent form. The 24-year-old claimed the 10th ATP title of his career at the Estoril Open last month, and a ninth on clay, but there have been plenty of strange fluctuations in his form all season long. A run to the semi-finals of the Italian Open last week should improve his confidence but a defeat from a set up to Holger Rune will be tough to take ahead of Roland-Garros, where he finished runner-up to Rafael Nadal last summer, as his claim to ‘best of the rest’ on clay looks far from true this time around. World number 49 J.J. Wolf bet Hugo Dellien in straight sets on Tuesday to get a good foothold in at the Geneva Open and he will know his best chance at success in this first meeting with Ruud is starting hard and fast to shake any budding confidence. Ruud should be winning this match in straight sets in these conditions but taking the Norwegian to win outright is the suitably cautious move.
