THE PREDICTION
There was some odd aggro between world number seven Holger Rune and number 11 Casper Ruud in 2022 that could add an extra edge to this first meeting since last summer but in-form Ruud will likely attempt to rise above it. The 25-year-old lead Rune 5-1 in their surprisingly one-sided head-to-head but this first meeting between the two on a hardcourt will be a fascinating new data-point, particularly as the Norwegian has made some aggressive changes to his approach on this surface. Ruud beat Stefanos Tsitsipas at this stage of the Los Cabos Open last week and his comeback over Ben Shelton on Thursday was just as impressive, although a defeat to Jordan Thompson in the final last Sunday was certainly avoidable. 20-year-old Rune has yet to drop a set since joining back up with coach Patrick Mouratoglou this week but this will be his biggest test yet in Acapulco. Ruud’s recent results, and his performances against Rune in the latter stages of tournaments, suggests he can edge through here.
