World number three Casper Ruud beat Ben Shelton in straight sets on Tuesday to get a promising Barcelona Open campaign underway in a strong reaction to his shock exit to Jan-Lennard Struff at the Monte-Carlo Open last week. The 24-year-old needs to do more winning at this level and higher on clay whilst he can as the likes of Carlos Alcaraz and Holger Rune look set to dominate the surface over the coming years but a recent win at the Estoril Open maintained his status as the most effective ATP 250 champion of the past few years. World number 32 Francisco Cerundolo conceded just four games to Francesco Passaro on Wednesday and he upset Cam Norrie in straight sets at Monte-Carlo before a three-set defeat to Matteo Berrettini for some strong recent results on clay. The Argentine claimed his maiden ATP title on clay at the Bastad Open last summer in which he upset Ruud in three sets to level their head-to-head record at 1-1 and Ruud remains fragile this season despite some improvements on his poor start. The Norwegian should be able to come through here but it would not be a huge surprise to see the opposite, so taking Ruud to earn at least a set would be the sensible concession for an accumulator.
