THE PREDICTION
World number five Casper Ruud finished runner-up to Carlos Alcaraz in four sets here last summer to prove a lot of people wrong about his efficacy away from his favoured clay. Despite enduring an oddly erratic season on tour the Norwegian still managed to reach a second Roland-Garros final in a row before losing in straight sets to Novak Djokovic, to whom he also finished runner-up at the ATP Finals late last season. Ruud’s peaks and troughs this year make him blasting through in straight sest about as likely as crashing out of the first round against qualifier Emilio Nava, who will be backed to the hilt as an exciting American up-and-comer, and this is not as straightforward as it may look with Nava qualifying the hard way this summer. The 21-year-old stunned John Millman in five sets this time last year and took former champion Andy Murray to four before defeat to look a creditable threat and Ruud brings a two-match losing streak into the draw after a three-set upset by Max Purcell in Cincinnati. The suitably cautious call is taking Ruud to win outright here but in that case perhaps the shrewd one is taking Nava to earn at least a set.
