World number four Casper Ruud will be pleased to be back on the clay for two more weeks this season after a sorry spell on the grass. The 24-year-old lost to British wildcard Liam Broady in five sets in the second round of Wimbledon two weeks ago but he finished runner-up to Novak Djokovic at Roland-Garros to prove the gulf in his abilities across surfaces. Ruud won the Bastad Open two years ago, one of nine ATP titles at this level on his favoured clay and one of 10 overall, and he should be considered the firm favourite to add another this week. World number 96 Alexander Shevchenko is an interesting fixture, though, after the Russian’s form on clay earlier this season. The 22-year-old won the Madrid Challenger in April before an excellent run to the third round of the Masters tournament there was eventually ended by compatriot Daniil Medvedev and a straight-sets victory over Juan Manuel Cerundolo on Tuesday gives him a good foothold ahead of this clash. Ruud can sometimes struggle early in a tournament but two weeks off should have done the tireless Norwegian a lot of good. Backing Ruud to win outright is the suitably cautious pick here.
