THE PREDICTION

World number four Casper Ruud has endured an erratic season so far but he looked to be in good shape on Friday as he handed Arthur Rinderknech a second-set bagel. The 24-year-old claimed his 10th ATP title at the Estoril Open last month to make it nine titles on clay overall but he has yet to win an event higher than ATP 250 level despite reaching two Grand Slam finals last season. World number 49 Alexander Bublik is erratic at the best of times but he will be pleased to string to wins together on tour for only the second time in what has been a poor season by his standards. The 25-year-old beat Ben Shelton in three sets on Friday to back-up a solid opener over Pedro Martinez but the conditions in Rome heavily favour Ruud and the Norwegian leads their head-to-head 4-1. Ruud ended Bublik’s career-best run at Masters level with a straight-sets result in the quarter-finals of the Madrid Open two years ago and he should be able to replicate that here. His confidence issues, however, make taking him to win outright the sensible call.
