World number 51 Yulia Putintseva beat Claire Liu in straight sets on Tuesday to get a solid foothold at the Madrid Open and she should not be underestimated in this match-up. The 28-year-old has twice reached the quarter-finals of Roland-Garros and both of her WTA titles have come on clay, her favoured surface. Whilst world number five Garcia is also an excellent clay-courter the Frenchwoman has struggled to fully dial-in to tournaments this season, losing two finals at the Lyon Open and Monterrey Open in which she was the favourite and more recently suffering upsets to Sorana Cirstea (twice) and Anastasia Potapova. 29-year-old Garcia should be able to navigate a way through here but Putintseva has a match at altitude in her legs already and that could see this go the distance. Back Garcia to earn at least a set inside an accumulator but consider a one-off on Putintseva to take at least a set otherwise.
