THE PREDICTION
29-year-old Caroline Garcia moved back up to her career-high WTA world ranking of fourth this week despite some recent early exits at the Miami Open, Stuttgart Open and Madrid Open. The Frenchwoman rediscovered her best, most ruthless tennis last summer to storm back into form and she ended 2023 with a title on each surface including two prestigious trophies on hardcourts at the Cincinnati Masters and the WTA Finals. Clay is probably Garcia’s best surface, though, and she will be desperate to build up some form here ahead of her best chance to win Roland-Garros since reaching the quarter-finals in 2017. World number 59 Ana Bogdan enjoyed a comfortable opener over qualifier Nao Hibino on Wednesday and the Romanian is also at her best in these conditions. Bogdan came into form on clay last summer to reach her maiden WTA tour final at the Poland Open before losing in straight sets to a peak Garcia and that should motivate her for revenge here.
Garcia should be extending her head-to-head record over Bogdan to 3-0 here in straight sets but there is enough trepidation to warrant caution. Back Garcia to win outright inside an accumulator or in straight sets on its own.
