THE PREDICTION
World number one Carlos Alcaraz is improving with each round at Roland-Garros, matching his best run here by reaching the quarter-finals with a bullish display over Lorenzo Musetti. The 20-year-old was stunned in four sets this time last season against a peak Alexander Zverev but he returns to Paris as a Grand Slam champion after beating Casper Ruud to the US Open title and with four ATP titles to his name already this season, including on clay from Buenos Aires, the Madrid Masters and the Barcelona Open – where he beat Stefanos Tsitsipas in the final. World number five Tsitsipas has played himself into form this fortnight, conceding his only set to an impressive Jiri Vesely in the first round, and he has won at this stage before as runner-up to Novak Djokovic here in 2021.
The 24-year-old will be Alcaraz’ toughest test yet but their head-to-head makes for grim reading for the Greek, with Alcaraz leading 4-0 since their epic five-set first meeting at the US Open two years ago. Alcaraz came in as the title favourite and he remains so, with a possible semi-final against Novak Djokovic almost certainly deciding this summer’s champion. Back the Spaniard to win outright with four sets about as likely as three.
