World number two Carlos Alcaraz is the defending champion here in Barcelona where he gained the form on clay that saw him truly announce himself to the world as a soon-to-be world number one by becoming the first player to beat Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic back-to-back on clay at the Madrid Open. The 19-year-old went on to win his first Grand Slam title last season at the US Open and after a brief absence from tour through injury he regained his top spot by winning Indian Wells for the first time before Novak Djokovic once again usurped him. World number 25 Roberto Bautista Agut beat Bernabe Zapata Miralles in straight sets on Tuesday to claim only his third victory on tour since reaching the round of 16 at the Australian Open back in January. The 34-year-old is too good of a professional to stay down for long but it has been a fairly drab few months on tour and this draw against Alcaraz looks too soon for him to be able to bring his best. Alcaraz conceded just two games to RBA at Indian Wells last season and he can be backed to win in straight sets once again here.
