World number one Carlos Alcaraz has entertained Wimbledon crowds all week long on Court 1 and Centre but the Spaniard is still far from the finished article on grass. The 20-year-old went from undercooked on the surface to a Wimbledon contender with victory at Queen’s two weeks ago but he has been challenged so far by rugged, powerful players on the fastest surface and there is room for foes after a four-set victory over Nicolas Jarry on Saturday. Alcaraz has matched his best run here after losing out to Jannik Sinner in one of the matches of the season at this stage last summer but he beat the Italian en-route to his maiden Grand Slam title at the US Open.
MATTEO BERRETTINI
Former world number six Matteo Berrettini seemed to exorcise a lot of demons on Court 1 on Saturday night, producing some of his best tennis to beat Alexander Zverev in three tight sets. The 27-year-old finished runner-up here to Novak Djokovic in 2021, taking the first set before defeat, and he won Stuttgart and Queen’s last summer to look an even bigger threat coming into SW19. Unfortunately, the Italian was served a cruel blow by contracting covid-19 on the eve of the tournament and he has struggled with that disappointment ever since, amidst suffering an inordinate amount of debilitating injuries.
THE PREDICTION
Three victories so far over top 30 players, past and present, looked impossible for Matteo Berrettini coming into Wimbledon but the Italian is suddenly a contender once more at SW19. The 27-year-old is one of the best, most natural grass-courters on tour at his best but he has struggled with form and fitness practically ever since his heart-breaking exit without even playing here last season and he will throw everything he has at this blockbuster tie. World number one Carlos Alcaraz is a title contender by merit as well as ranking after winning Wimbledon but his performance against the tall, powerful Nicolas Jarry makes this clash suddenly very interesting. Much of this match relies on how well Berrettini can recover, as well as maintain, but all three of their previous meetings have required deciding sets. Alcaraz leads Berrettini 2-1 in their tight head-to-head record but Berrettini claimed their only Grand Slam match in five gruelling sets at the Australian Open last season. The Spaniard is the favourite to come through but take Berrettini to earn at least a set and add at least a tiebreak here to leave the victor up to chance.
