THE PREDICTION
World number one Carlos Alcaraz enjoyed an early rest on Tuesday after Dominik Koepfer suffered a horrid early ankle roll in their match, eventually retiring halfway through the second set. 20-year-old Alcaraz is defending a Grand Slam title for the first time after beating the likes of former champion Marin Cilic, rival Jannik Sinner, Frances Tiafoe and Casper Ruud to lift his maiden major title but he eclipsed that feat this summer with a five-set victory over four-time defending Wimbledon champion Novak Djokovic at SW19. A US Open showdown between Alcaraz and Djokovic looks set to come to fruition but Alcaraz could do with a few more rounds of easy progress after struggling to find his best level since coming back onto hardcourts. Former world number 31 Lloyd Harris reached the quarter-finals here back in 2021 and came close to stunning Alexander Zverev there before injuries saw him wall by the wayside last season.
The 26-year-old’s big serve could prove a nuisance early on in this first encounter but Alcaraz should have more than enough to come through in straight sets as Harris continues to rehabilitate.
