THE PREDICTION
20-year-old Carlos Alcaraz moved back up to world number one this week after winning his first ATP title on grass at Queen’s. The Spaniard went from looking slightly out of his depth on the surface to a serious Wimbledon contender in the space of a week in West London, lifting his first grass-court title earlier than any of the ‘Big Three’ did before him. Queen’s was Alcaraz’ fifth ATP title of the season and 11th overall, with his greatest to date a first Grand Slam won at the US Open last summer. Alcaraz lost in four thrilling sets to Jannik Sinner in the round of 16 here last season in one of the matches of the year.
Former world number 25 Jeremy Chardy returned from a year-long absence at the start of 2023 and this will be only his fifth singles match of the season. The 36-year-old has spent much of this season playing doubles and coaching young French prospect Ugo Humbert as he nears the twilight of his own career but he remains a popular player who will provide some fierce forehands in this mis-match. Back Alcaraz to win in straight sets here but it would not be a surprise to see Chardy start strongly in set one before falling away quickly.
