World number one Carlos Alcaraz fought back well to beat an impressive Max Purcell in three sets on Friday but it was the Spaniard’s latest in a string of unconvincing – by his high standards – performances. The 20-year-old’s last five matches have gone to three sets as he looks to be struggling for consistency since the start of his hardcourt swing, although a blip in form would be wholly understandable after winning his first Wimbledon title in a modern classic against Novak Djokovic last month. World number 20 Hubert Hurkacz almost beat the Spaniard in the round of 16 of the Canada Masters last week but the Pole faltered from a break up in the third to see a huge chance go begging. The 26-year-old is better than his current ranking suggests at his best but we have only really seen a spark in him over the past two weeks, with victories over both of last year’s Cincinnati finalists, Stefanos Tsitsipas and champion Borna Coric, suggesting he is enjoying the conditions.
Four of the five sets played between these two have gone to a tiebreak to offer a useful combination in lieu of a tricky result. Back Alcaraz to earn at least a set and for at least one tiebreak in the match.
