World number one Carlos Alcaraz made it 15 wins on the spin with a straight-sets results over Ben Shelton late on Wednesday. World number 17 Hubert Hurkacz once came close to that with a semi-final exit at SW19 to Djokovic two years ago but the Pole’s once rock-steady resolve has taken a few hits since, with last summer’s Canada Masters final defeat to Pablo Carreno Busta ending his five-match winning streak in finals. 26-year-old Hurkacz remains a serious threat on hardcourts and grass with one of the most potent serves on tour and a world class net game but he faces a player who can match him for both and then some. Alcaraz won their semi-final in Miami last season in two tiebreaks and taking him to win outright here with at least one tiebreak in the match looks a valuable combination.
