THE LOWDOWN
CARLOS ALCARAZ
World number one Carlos Alcaraz came back from a set down to beat former Wimbledon finalist Matteo Berrettini on Monday, growing into the match with each set as his opponent began to falter. The 20-year-old has broke new ground at Wimbledon after a round of 16 exit to Jannik Sinner this time last summer and he is improving all the time on the surface after winning his first ATP title on grass at Queen’s three weeks ago. Alcaraz won his maiden ATP title at the US Open last season in Novak Djokovic’s absence but his defeat to the Serb in the semi-finals of Roland-Garros are proof of work to be done still.
HOLGER RUNE
World number six Holger Rune came back from a set down to outlast an excellent Grigor Dimitrov on Monday, taking the second and third set tiebreaks before exerting his will in the fourth. The 20-year-old is also still the unfinished article on grass but this time last season he was still only considered a young rising clay specialist before his incredible transformation on the hardcourt swing culminated in victory over Novak Djokovic at the Paris Masters. Rune has battled hard to make the quarter-finals at Wimbledon for the first time but he has yet to progress further than this after losing back-to-back matches at this stage of Roland-Garros to Casper Ruud in the last two seasons.
THE PREDICTION
Old friends and new rivals meet here for what should be a thrilling, unmissable battle on Wednesday. The pair share a 1-1 head-to-head record but this is realistically their first true encounter after Alcaraz beat the Dane at the 2021 Next Gen ATP Finals and Rune came through their quarter-final at the Paris Masters last November via an injury. This match will be made all the more interesting by the fact that it is on grass, still both players’ weakest surfaces, as both players continue to improve in the conditions. Rune should likely thrive on his Centre Court debut as a player who craves these moments more than most but Alcaraz has displayed the better alterations on grass over the last month, with Rune’s grit taking him through matches he is still playing a little like a hardcourt. Sets should go both ways here but Alcaraz should just-edge through, particularly as Rune has sometimes been let down by his body at this stage of a tournament through cramping. Five sets is an intriguing option but otherwise take Alcaraz to edge through and add at least a tiebreak.
