World number two Carlos Alcaraz defended a title for the first time last week with an excellent campaign at the Barcelona Open but he came perilously close to failing at the first hurdle of his Madrid defence on Friday. The 19-year-old had to come back from a set down against in-form Emil Ruusuvuori but he should be better for it moving forwards. Alcaraz remains the very clear favourite to defend his title in Novak Djokovic and Rafael Nadal’s absence, whom he beat back-to-back here last season, but the likes of Holger Rune and Stefanos Tsitsipas are certainly factors. Former world number three Grigor Dimitrov had to work hard to beat Gregoire Barrere in two tiebreaks on Friday but this looks way too steep of a challenge. The Bulgarian’s last result over a top five player came against Daniil Medvedev at Indian Wells back in 2021 and the partisan atmosphere pulling for Alcaraz should make this a rather gruelling experience. Back Alcaraz to win in straight sets.
