CARLOS ALCARAZ
World number one Carlos Alcaraz put in an excellent performance to beat his contemporary Holger Rune in three sets on Wednesday, overcoming the Dane’s early pressure in a first-set tiebreak before closing it out in assured fashion. The 20-year-old protected his serve throughout that match to look ever more serious a contender at Wimbledon, improving on two four-set victories in his previous two rounds. Alcaraz claimed his maiden Grand Slam title at the US Open last summer in Novak Djokovic’s absence and his defeat to the Serb at Roland-Garros last month is proof of work to be done.
DANIIL MEDVEDEV
World number three Daniil Medvedev played very well indeed to overcome a spirited fight back by Christopher Eubanks on Wednesday, with the American’s second set perhaps the most prolific by any player this tournament. 27-year-old Medvedev won his first Grand Slam at the US Open, like Alcaraz, in 2021, spoiling Novak Djokovic’s attempt at a calendar slam in the process. The Serb has thrice finished runner-up at majors, once to Djokovic at the Australian Open in 2021 and twice to Rafael Nadal in New York in 2019 and Melbourne last season.
THE PREDICTION
No has more wins on tour this season than Daniil Medvedev’s 46 but world number one Carlos Alcaraz can draw level with the Russian if he beats him here, just behind him on 45. The 20-year-old’s victory over Matteo Berrettini in the round of 16 was perhaps his best result on grass this campaign as he continues to improve on the surface but beating Holger Rune in straight sets is a remarkable display of grit that makes him look ever more capable of reaching the final. This is a thoroughly interesting match-up, though, as if we can assume Novak Djokovic will reach the final it may be that Medvedev has the better chance at the upset there with the experience of beating the Serb in a major final before. Medvedev beat an 18-year-old Alcaraz in straight sets here two years ago, in the second round, but the Spaniard levelled their head-to-head with a blistering performance to win the Indian Wells final in March.
Medvedev passed a significant test on Wednesday in overcoming the crowd, a player whose confidence was briefly full to the brim, and his own simmering emotions to come through in five sets. Alcaraz has endured the tougher run, though, and he has provably found a way to frustrate the Russian in a prestigious match this season. Sets should go both ways but Alcaraz’ irrepressible drop shot should get plenty of joy here and his serve is improving on grass all the time. Back the Spaniard to reach the final.
