THE PREDICTION
This should be a thrilling fifth encounter between former world number two Alexander Zverev and current number two Carlos Alcaraz. The pair last faced off in the quarter-finals of Roland-Garros last summer where Zverev made full use of the Spaniard’s wayward performance to win through in four sets, taking a 3-1 lead in their head-to-head after Alcaraz beat Zverev comfortably in the final here last season. The pair have won three of the last five Madrid Open titles between them but defending champion Alcaraz remains the favourite to take it this week on a seven-match winning streak from defending his Barcelona Open title last week.
An early scare over Emil Ruusuvuori was backed up with an improved straight-sets win over Grigor Dimitrov on Sunday but 26-year-old Zverev conceded just one game in his match with Hugo Grenier to suggest he has found his groove at happy hunting grounds. The German is still not back to full capabilities after his return from injury and he should need to be to beat this version of Alcaraz. Back the Spaniard to utilise the crowd to edge through outright here, probably in two tight sets.
