THE PREDICTION
Former world number one Karolina Pliskova is desperately seeking some consistent form on tour after falling back as far as 78th this week. The 31-year-old is always capable of a sudden surge to the latter stages of the most prestigious events but those runs are becoming fewer and further between in recent seasons. A straight-sets victory over Sinja Kraus came harder than it should have on Tuesday but she did at least snap a three-match losing streak in doing so. Pliskova’s 2024 has been typical so far with top showings against the likes of Naomi Osaka and in defeat to Elena Rybakina either side of a hammering by fellow Czech Katerina Siniakova.
Former number 33 Camila Osorio is at her best on a clay court but she beat Viktoriya Tomova handily on Monday to kickstart her Cluj-Napoca campaign and she has the guts to earn at least a decider in this first encounter. Pliskova should be rolling through in straight sets at anything like her best but backing her to come through outright is the suitably cautious approach.
