THE PREDICTION

World number three Jessica Pegula conceded just six games to fellow American Danielle Collins on Sunday for an excellent opener at Roland-Garros. The 29-year-old reached the quarter-finals here last season before defeat to eventual champion Iga Swiatek and she has reached at least the third round in each of her last six Grand Slam appearances as one of the most consistent performers on tour over the past few seasons. World number 37 Camila Giorgi did well to beat home hopeful Alize Cornet in straight sets on Sunday but this looks too steep of a challenge for the Italian. Pegula beat Giorgi in three sets at Indian Wells in March to take a 5-1 lead in their head-to-head record at tour level which includes a three-set result on clay at the Madrid Open last season. Four of their six tour-level matches have needed a deciding set, so take Pegula to win outright here.
