World number 37 Camila Giorgi survived an early scare against Arantxa Rus on Wednesday, coming back from a set down to beat the qualifier in relative comfort by the end. 31-year-old Giorgi is a solid all-courter whose best level is certainly of top 20 quality but she is also one of the most erratic players on tour. The Italian will enjoy a partisan atmosphere on home clay but she is probably still the underdog against in-form Ekaterina Alexandrova, who took Iga Swiatek to three sets in a thrilling battle before defeat in the round of 16 of Madrid last week. After a slow start to 2023, world number 22 Alexandrova has impressed with deep runs in Miami, Charleston and Madrid to look the favourite here. Giorgi leads Alexandrova 2-1 in their head-to-head record but the Russian claimed their most recent encounter in three sets last season and she has improved since. Still, Giorgi has earned at least a set in each of their three matches to make this one of the more difficult calls of the round. Three sets could be a valuable alternative to picking a winner here but otherwise take Alexandrova to earn at least a set as the just-about likelier victor.
