THE PREDICTION
23-year-old Bianca Andreescu set a career-high WTA world ranking of fourth in 2019 after one of the most explosive debut seasons in living memory. The Canadian won Indian Wells in March before repeating the feat here at her home Masters event and she then took that into a searing campaign at the US Open, winning as a debutante at Serena Williams’ expense. However, the current world number 41 has failed to win a title since and she has struggled to maintain her best tennis long enough to see out strong performances for much of 2023. A three-set defeat to Ons Jabeur in the third round at Wimbledon last month provided some hope but she lost from a set up for the second time in a row at the Washington Open last week, to Marta Kostyuk, to bring plenty of doubt into this opener. World number 51 Camila Giorgi is even more inexplicable than Andreescu as one of the most potent shot-makers at her rare best but also one of the most erratic. The 31-year-old won here two years ago to take her most prestigious of four WTA titles but she had to qualify this weekend after a mixed season so far.
Leave this match about as far away from an accumulator as you can but otherwise take Andreescu to earn at least a set with the backing of a home crowd desperate to see her excel.
