26-year-old Borna Coric struggled to find any sort of rhythm for the first third of this season but he produced a brilliant run to the semi-finals of the Madrid Open last week before defeat to eventual champion Carlos Alcaraz. The Croat is now just four places behind his career-high ATP world ranking of 12th first set in 2018 to further confirm success in his rehabilitation from a long injury lay-off between 2021 and mid last year. World number 98 Thiago Monteiro is a fierce competitor on clay, though, and in some strong form so far this season. The Brazilian conceded just three games to Adrian Mannarino on Thursday and he can take some confidence here as the winner of the only previous match with Coric, on clay, at the Buenos Aires Open three years ago. Coric may take some getting used to the quick turnaround from semi-final to first round here and Monteiro is not the sort of player you want to face straight after a big emotional output. Back Coric to win outright but consider leaving this one out of any promising accumulators.
