World number 64 Pedro Cachin did very well to cope with Dominic Thiem’s resurgence in their five-set thriller on Monday as he took the first two sets and then a more comfortable fifth against the former finalist. The 28-year-old came into serious form last season on the Challenger circuit to transfer over to full tour life and after a slow start to 2023 he recently took some encouraging wins over the likes of Francisco Cerundolo and Frances Tiafoe. World number 16 Borna Coric enjoyed an impressive run to the semi-finals at the Madrid Open before defeat to eventual champion Carlos Alcaraz and he backed that up by reaching the quarter-finals in Rome. The 26-year-old conceded a set to Federico Coria in a tight four-set victory on Monday that suggests backing him to win outright is the sensible move here but Cachin should not be underestimated. Back Coric to win at least two sets as the likelier of two capable victors.
