THE PREDICTION
World number 29 Borna Coric is the top seed here in Winston-Salem but his ranking has almost doubled since last week as he failed to defend his Cincinnati Open title. The 26-year-old needed three sets to overcome Michael Mmoh on Wednesday to suggest there is some fragility to exploit but this looks his kindest draw yet in these conditions. World number 100 Juan Manuel Cerundolo is a significant anomaly in the quarter-finals after upsetting Roman Safiullin and Yannick Hanfmann in three sets apiece but his straight-sets victory over home hopeful Omni Kumar on Wednesday is perhaps the most impressive in a transition from underdog to favourite. Coric has endured an odd few months of intermittent form but the Croat should be too good to lose this match. Straight sets is a risk given Cerundolo’s run but the top seed should be coming through unscathed.
