World number 35 Alejandro Davidovich Fokina grabbed a much-needed top 10 win against Holger Rune on Sunday to prove how effective he can be on his favoured clay. The 23-year-old finished runner-up to Stefanos Tsitsipas at the Monte-Carlo Open last season but ha has struggled to impress on clay so far this season, with his quarter-final defeat to Carlos Alcaraz at the Barcelona Open two weeks ago the first signs of improvement. World number 20 Borna Coric saw off 12th seed Hubert Hurkacz in straight sets on Sunday to take back-to-back wins for only the second time this season, although his previous pair of victories saw one result come by an early retirement. The 26-year-old came back from a long injury lay off last summer to win the most prestigious title of his career at the Cincinnati Masters but he has struggled to find any consistency this season so far.
Davidovich Fokina was the first player Coric met on his return from injury at Indian Wells last March, where Coric took the first set before tiring to lose in three. This time around the pair should meet on more level a playing field and whilst the Spaniard looks the favourite after a statement win like Sunday’s he is exactly the sort of player to lose focus in his next match. Back Davidovich Fokina to earn at least a set as the likelier of two very capable winners but if you take him to win outright it would be wise to leave this match out of an accumulator.
