THE PREDICTION
This looks like one of the more difficult matches to call on a stacked Friday at Wimbledon. A first meeting between world number 26 Anhelina Kalinina and current number 50 Bianca Andreescu would likely go the Ukrainian’s way on clay and the Canadian’s way on a hardcourt but grass offers way more questions than answers. Former world number four Andreescu has the better pedigree at this level after winning the US Open in 2019 but the last few seasons of intermittent injuries have seen her miss the majority of the clay and grass swings to bring relative inexperience into SW19. The 23-year-old is through to the second round here for the second time but it took three sets to oust Anna Bondar on Thursday and she has failed to win back-to-back matches on grass so far this year. In contrast, 26-year-old Kalinina recently produced the form of her career to reach the Italian Open final, where she finished runner-up to Elena Rybakina. The 26th seed beat qualifier Jessica Maneiro in straight sets on Thursday to win her first match since that day in late May and she should be better for it here.
Leave this head-scratcher well away from any accumulators but Kalinina has impressed on the ‘natural’ surfaces over the last two seasons to suggest taking her to earn at least a set is the sensible way to avoid a result.
