World number three Daniil Medvedev beat in-form Emil Ruusuvuori in straight sets on Sunday to get a foothold at the Italian Open. The 27-year-old has been vocal about his chances on his least effective surface but he has more wins on the ATP tour than anyone else this season and it should take a top talent to oust him despite his dislike for clay. 26-year-old Bernabe Zapata Miralles should set a new career-high ATP world ranking of 37th after beating Jason Kubler in straight sets on Saturday, backing-up an excellent run to the round of 16 at the Madrid Open two weeks ago before defeat to Stefanos Tsitsipas. The Spaniard is by far the more comfortable in these conditions but whilst he has impressed on clay over the past 12 months he has so far found an impenetrable ceiling around the top 10 mark. Three sets are a distinct possibility here but Medvedev should be able to find a way through to the round of 16.
