Former world number 18 Benoit Paire was at his best on clay at his peak but the Frenchman has been a shade of his former self for a number of years on tour despite one or two brief flashes a season. The 33-year-old came back from a set down twice in qualifying to make the main draw in Madrid but he is still looking for his first tour-level win this season and a young player full of running like Matteo Arnaldi should be able to out-last him. 22-year-old Arnaldi will break the top 100 on tour with victory here after qualifying to make his Madrid Masters debut and taking him to earn at least a set looks a reasonable call for an accumulator. Otherwise back the Italian to win outright after he grabbed a first tour-level win of the season last week in Barcelona.
