21-year-old Ben Shelton burst onto the world stage with a remarkable debut run to the quarter-finals of the Australian Open last season, doing so via a five-set victory in the first round over Zhizhen Zhang. The American is now up to a career-high ATP world ranking of 14th after recently picking up his second title, and a first on clay, at the Houston Open and he looks in decent shape in Rome after an impressive comeback over Pavel Kotov on Friday.
World number 56 Zhang is yet to drop a set after making short work of an out-of-sorts Adrian Mannarino on Friday but the Chinese will have to improve on recent performances if he has any chance at upsetting Shelton. A comfortable defeat to left-hander Ugo Humbert on clay at the Monte-Carlo Open this time last month does not bode well against the American, whose confidence is growing on this surface.
