THE PREDICTION
20-year-old Ben Shelton burst onto the scene in January with a remarkable run to the quarter-finals of the Australian Open on his debut, playing 20 sets across five gruelling matches before finally coming unstuck against Tommy Paul. The American set a career-high ATP world ranking of 35th earlier this month but he has looked inexperienced, understandably, on clay so far this season and four wins from a possible 12 since Melbourne suggests he is the underdog in this first round clash despite being the seeded player. World number 45 Lorenzo Sonego is a top 30 player at least at his best but he has struggled with consistency issues for much of the past two seasons. The 28-year-old lost to Shelton in three sets at the Cincinnati Open last summer but he is by far the more comfortable clay-courter and there have been encouraging signs of better form in recent months. This match looks a reasonable candidate for five sets on Sunday but otherwise back Sonego to edge through outright.
